diet dr. pepper caffeine
soda chem question, can i freeze my soda and somehow get a caffeine extract?

i just recently pulled a diet dr pepper 2 litre out the fridge it was frozen.

some dark soda remained in the bottom while a big chunk of crystallized ice swirls in it. so i began to wonder.

is the caffeine in the ice? or what is caught when the coke freezes and the majority of it becomes frozen and the colorin im assuming etc is left in the bottom surrounding the ice.

does the caffeine freeze as well or will a lot sump to the bottom with that soda or whatever doesn’t freeze.

caffeine extract possible does it fall to the bottom. basically. what freezes and why is there some liquid left then at the bottom etc.

anyone care to elaborate even more, you kinda can grasp what i’m getting at and what happens to the carbonation once it freezes?

thanks!

The ice is just water. When water freezes, it condenses into a crystal structure that is ice. Ice has a very specific structure, and as it freezes, it pushes other stuff (like the dark part of the soda, which is basically sugar syrup + flavor + yes, caffeine) out of the way to make its crystal shape. Everything that’s not water is what’s been pushed to the bottom of your soda bottle. That’s where the caffeine is, but it’s not just caffeine, it’s also the sugar and dr. pepper flavorings.

As for the carbonation, that’s carbon dioxide gas, and since it’s lighter than soda and water, it rises up as the soda freezes.
