Drinking on a Diet
For the most part, when you are following a strict regime of clean eating and regular exercising, drinking alcohol tends to take a back seat. While it’s best for your diet that alcohol be a very occasional visitor, it is inevitable that you are going to be faced with a situation in which you will need to consume alcohol. It is best if you know what type of alcohol to chose and can limit yourself to remain faithful to your weight loss plan.
The most diet friendly alcoholic drink is wine, either red or white. Generally speaking, both variety of wines run at about 20 calories and less than 0.2 grams of carbohydrates per ounce. Some sweeter varieties such as ice wine or sherry are a bit higher but do not pose a significant effect on your diet progress as long as they are enjoyed in moderation.
After wine comes hard liquor. Hard liquor generally contains slightly more calories than wine but packs much more of a punch which is why it is often mixed with other drinks. Commonly added to soda and juice, a small cocktail can ultimately end up as a super fattening drink with the wrong mix involved. When drinking liquor, try it neat, on the rocks, or mixed with diet soda or tonic water. Avoid excessive calories which will only make you feel guilty the next day.
Beer takes the third place for alcoholic drinks appropriate for dieters. Many beers have included or created lighter versions of their premium beers that don’t necessarily sacrifice flavor. There are even beers with less than 65 calories per serving – less than a cup of fruit juice. Be forewarned though that pouring from a pitcher is a very easy way to overestimate the actual amount you may consume which can lead to an excessive amount of calories.
If you can “budget” your caloric intake to allow for occasional drinks, you will be able to enjoy yourself at the next social gathering without having to worry too much about blowing your diet. Remember though, drinking lowers your inhibitions and leaves you more prone to make decisions you wouldn’t normally make. It is very easy to get carried away and drink to excess. Moderation is the key when drinking alcohol.
