diet kidney failure dogs
The week after Thanksgiving our Shitzu was diagnosed with kidney failure. At that time the vet said?

we’d be lucky to still have him at Christmas. We love him dearly and were crushed at the news. We switched his diet to a perscription dog food and we’re injecting him twice a day with 60cc’s of I.V. fluid to help him flush out what his kidneys can’t handle. For the first few days I wouldn’t have bet 25 cents that he would last a week. But he perked up and is actually doing very well. We’re into late February and he’s still with us. He has energy to go for his daily walk. In fact on weekends he usually bugs us for two walks a day. He’s not the same puppy he was six months ago. But if you didn’t know he was sick, you’d never guess anything was wrong. My question is two fold. 1. Is it possible the vet’s diagnosis was wrong? 2. If she wasn’t wrong, realistically, how long can he hang on if we are strict with his diet and continue on the fluid therapy?

The vets diagnosis would be wrong only if blood tests weren’t done. How long depends on the age, general health of the dog and the cause of the renal failure(cancerous tumors etc)I have friends who’s dogs have lived well for 2 years in renal failure.Suggest you look into the yahoo group k9 kidney failure.
