Molding Installations

We all know how beautiful moldings look, especially when done correctly. They are quite an upgrade for any home.

I have been installing all forms of residential moldings for over twenty years. As a professional I have seen others install moldings that look like my kid did it. I have seen home owners who don’t know a good job from a horrible job. There are alot of contractors out there who will try just about anything to make a few bucks.

A contractors license does not mean competent professional, it’s just a license to contract. If you see an ad that says “Member of the Better Business Bureau” that just means that they paid a fee and got a plaque to hang on a wall.

If you are looking to have a contractor install moldings in your home, a few things you should look at is “How long they have  been in business”, “What is there specialty” and “Do they have any complaints against their license”.

Like I said, I have been installing moldings for twenty years now. I also build custom cabinetry. Every job I build has some sort of molding applied. When installing molding it is important to have tight joints. The less putty or caulking the better overall job. When we install moldings in a home there are usually hundreds of lineal feet to be done. In this case, I will make a table jig to make sure that the molding sits in the same exact postion (tilt) for every cut. This ensures tight fitting joints. However, we all know that walls are never straight and a nintey degree angle can sometimes actually be an eighty eight or a ninety one. In this situation, I make my inside and outside corner jigs to verify the angle.

As I nail the moldings to the wall, I always leave about five feet to all corners unnailed. When I come to those corners, I am able to tap with a block up or down on both pieces of the miter to close it up tight, then I nail the corners in place This is a technique that no one wants to share. If you have never done this, than it still might be a little tough. Practice will make you perfect.
