purina special diet cat food
Cat skin problems – black flakes, kind of like coffee grounds?

I’m cat sitting for someone and I’ve noticed lately that the cat has black flakes that kind of resemble coffee grinds in his fur on his back. It’s not at the base of his tail, but slightly forward from there. The cat is on a special diet, and I have to admit that a few weeks ago I gave him a substitute food for a couple days until I could afford to purchase his special diet (Purina urinary diet that can only be purchased at the vet). That was weeks ago though, and he’s been on his regular food since then.

Does anyone have any idea of what I’m looking at? I can’t really afford to take the animal to the vet at this point, but I am concerned. Thanks for your input.

It sounds like fleas to me. Flea dirt at least. Are they moving if you comb them off? Call the owner. Don’t use flea products from stores. Either use a natural remedy of one from the vet. The cat doesn’t need to go in, you can just pick flea medication up at the vet.

Natural remedies include brewer’s yeast without garlic in their food, and apple cider vinegar on their coat. You can also use the water from a boiled sliced lemon for their coat.
