Going on this diet is supposed to help you eliminate about 13 pounds, most of it belly fat, in just a fortnight. Everyone obviously got excited at such news. This  almost sounds too good to be true.

The beauty about it is, in fact, that the claim is true. When Dr. Agatston outlined the program, his intention was to help his patients suffering from heart ailments, but he immediately noticed that it also causes rapid weight loss. Upon that discovery, who could blame him for presenting it to the world.

The central idea of this program is very different. The diet demands consuming the ‘right’ carbohydrates and fats whilst doing away with the wrong ones. So, what are the right ones? Well, the ones considered beneficial for your health are unsaturated or monosaturated fats and carbs with a low GI (glycaemic index)! To explain this in terms of actual aliments, olive oil should replace butter and pasta or porridge should take the place of potatoes and white bread in your diet.

The reason why low GI food is preferred is that they are proved to give you energy for a longer time, while high GI foods keep you full only for a very short period of time before hunger returns, thus causing you to eat more than you really need. Hence, foods that are low in GI are crucial if you want to reduce your weight.

But this is only a part of what this nutritional program advises. It has three phases that need to be followed. Here are the details about each:

PHASE 1: Eliminate as much carbohydrates as possible. You’re not supposed to eat sweets, pasta, white rice, bread or potatoes. You may have a small amount of broccoli and cabbage which are low in GI. At this time the following should not be missing from your plate: fish, eggs, low fat cheese, lean meat and olive oil. This step spans over two weeks in which, provided you follow the above-mentioned recommendations, you can expect to lose between 8 and 13 pounds.

PHASE 2: The rate at which your weight reduction is happening in this phase is much slower than in the previous one, and it will last until you are happy with your figure! Typically, you may only lose around 1-2 lbs per week. Low GI foods should make up for the most important part of your nutrition. For instance, you can have low fat milk, pasta, fruit and whole grain cereal.

PHASE 3: You will be required to stay on this phase for life! That’s because you’ve altered your nutritional habits, which will prevent you from gaining weight. This is your reward for making healthy choices.

This nutritional program also offers the advantage of allowing you to have as much food on your plate as you need. Eat three times daily until you are full and snack if you have to with healthy alternatives such as nuts for example.

Like most diets, the first week is the hardest as your body tries to adjust and get used to the change, especially as this involves reducing carbohydrates which typically constitutes a major part of most people’s diet. Unfortunately you will have to rely on willpower to help get you through the first week and note that you probably will feel a little more lethargic than normal as your body adjusts.

You need to know that you’ll lose a large amount of weight only in the first two weeks. The rest of your target will still be achieved, but possibly at a slower rate so ensure that mentally you are prepared for this.

So there you have it. Instead of offering a fast solution that’ll be followed for a limited time, the South Beach Diet should be embraced as a shift of nutritional habits towards healthier choices. At first it is a good way to eliminate excess fat, but its main purpose is to help you change your eating habits and stay on the right track ever after.
